The diamond segment is the basis of the diamond tool.
The diamond segment is the cutting segment of the tool, it is made from a mixture of metal powder and artificial diamonds. For the production of diamond segments, artificial diamonds are usually used, having super-strong properties that exceed the strength of natural diamonds. This is the reason for the reliability and efficiency of diamond equipment.
Segments come in different types of ligament: hard and soft, it is important to take this into account when choosing a segment. The softer the working material (chamotte, silicate, asphalt, brick), the harder the bond should be, and vice versa. For hard materials (stone, concrete, granite, marble)segments of the soft ligament are suitable. Choosing the right ligament will help keep the tool from wearing out.
There are two types of segments available:
- normal – with a uniform distribution of diamond chips throughout the volume;
- sandwich diamonds in such segments are randomly dispersed, their composition is uneven in different parts of the matrix.
The former, despite their more uniform structure, wear out faster, since when used, a crown-shaped grinding is formed, while the disc may jam. As a result, it is impossible to use them until they are completely worn off.
Sandwich segments, on the contrary, are worn off evenly, maintain a constant width during operation, which leads to the same forces applied to the materials. They can be operated until they are completely worn out, and a slight rounding allows for smoother cuts.
